When Both Knees Are Scanned Together
A bilateral study is ordered when the problem is not confined to one side, or when the healthy side is needed as a baseline:

How It Differs from a Single-Knee MRI
Two complete sets of sequences are acquired, one per knee, so table time is longer than a single-joint study — usually 40 to 55 minutes rather than 20 to 30. Both knees are positioned and imaged in the same appointment, and the findings come back as one report covering the pair.
Preparing for a Bilateral Knee MRI
Wear loose, metal-free clothing and remove jewellery, watches, hairpins and magnetic-strip cards before entering the scan room. Because you will be on the table longer, use the washroom beforehand and mention any back pain or difficulty lying flat — positioning support can be arranged. Declare implants, a pacemaker, metallic fragments or pregnancy at screening.
During the Scan
You lie on your back with both knees supported in the coil, and the scanner works through one knee and then the other. The knocking noise comes in bursts between sequences; earplugs or headphones are provided. The scan is painless, but staying still for the full duration matters — movement in the second half is the usual reason a set has to be repeated.
